TV Pilot: In The Band (Part II) - Touring

The second segment of the In The Band TV pilot starts on the first cymbal crash of Gov’t Mule’s standard, “Rocking Horse.” One of the goals of the TV pilot is to seamlessly weave lyrical themes into the story line. This package segues from “Rocking Horse” 2006 to “Rocking Horse” 1998 where the band is seen performing the song at Red Rock Amphitheater in Morrison, CO. Visually, the audience is treated to rare, never-before-seen, roadie footage that features the band on tour circa 1998. Life on the road is described through the lyrics of “Rocking Horse” which continue to serve as the segment’s soundbed.

In 2000, Gov’t Mule’s founding bass player, Allen Woody passed away. Host, Callie Stydahar, asks Matt Abts, “What’s one of the most difficult songs to face?” Matt responds by saying, “Music is healing,” and goes on to say how he would have been lost without music during his times of loss. Keyboardist, Danny Louis, describes how he fit into the equation post-Woody and Warren Haynes intimately recounts the immediate days proceeding Woody’s death. Ultimately, the band decided, “…the music has to live.”

After the band finishes “Rocking Horse” viewers are taken backstage where Warren and Matt describe the power outage that occurred during that night at Riviera Theater. “There are ghosts in the fucking machine,” says Matt. “You picked a wild night to film,” says Warren.
