A lot of musicians get asked to describe their sound. It’s a standard question. One I’m sure both artists and interviewers are bored to tears with. Still… That doesn’t always stop me from asking it. I’m glad I did when Magnet (a/k/a Even Johansen) walked into my studio. When prompted, he replies with a phrase an English journalist coined: “Electronicana.” That’s different! Magnet defines the term as a conglomerate of sounds that normally aren’t quite compatible. “Bit like me and my wife,” he quips.
The Norwegian’s newest single is a remake of the Bob Dylan classic “Lay Lady Lay” and features folk artists Gemma Hayes. Magnet says it took him an entire album to create what Dylan created in one song. The cover song has since appeared in the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith as well the FOX soap “The O.C.”
