After Blues Traveler was finished with their interview, the band set-up a semi-acoustic rig and performed the single “Amber Awaits” from their new album ¡Bastardos!. Every once in awhile, for the bigger shoots or multiple act days, I rent a soundboard and an audio engineer to mix and record a band’s performance in my studio. It’s such a luxury for me and normally benefits the viewer. Unfortunately, my normal hire wasn’t available for this shoot and his replacement ran the levels a bit hot and the keys are high in the mix. The audio isn’t perfect; however, the video still showcases a rare, one-off performance unlike any other video/audio recording of “Amber Awaits.”
A funny anecdote: Due to the DIY nature of my shoots, I had to ask the band the perform the song several times in order to get all the angles I needed. I think John Popper had a lot on his schedule as he appeared a bit put off by it. I can’t blame him really. It is quite redundant. Anyways, he and the band obliged and ended up performing “Amber Awaits” three times. Note the audio at the end of the video clip. You can hear Popper say, “Allright,” and then hear a thud. That’s because the shot you’re seeing is from the first take but the audio is from the third take. After the third take, Popper says, “Allight,” then drops the mic and immediately walks about of the studio. It was hilarious. Ladies and gentlemen… Popper has left the building!
